Linear Technology PLLWizard(TM) Installation Instructions ========================================================================== DESCRIPTION -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Linear Technology PLLWizard(TM) is used to communicate with the LTC6945 and LTC6946 synthesizers. It uses the DC590 to translate between USB and SPI-compatible serial communications formats. It also includes advanced PLL design and simulation capabilities. You may use it to: - Recommend part parameters based on your frequency plan - Design noise-optimized loop filters - Simulate loop frequency response and stability - Simulate VCO and Reference source noise - Simulate output noise characterisics and statistics Refer to the included LICENSE.rtf for important usage information. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Windows Operating System: Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, Windows Vista, Windows 7 - Microsoft .NET 2.0 or later - Windows Installer 3.1 or later - Linear Technology's DC590 Demo Board DETAILED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. PLEASE READ!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) DC590 You must possess a DC590 board, available from www.linear.com, to com- municate with the PLL Demo Board. But, PLLWizard WILL operate with "Communication Disabled" without a DC590. 2) Microsoft .NET You must have Microsoft .NET 2.0 or later installed on your computer. PLLWizard will not run without it. Note that Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 has at least version 3.5 preinstalled. To manually determine your version of .NET using Windows XP, click Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs or Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs Depending upon your .NET version, choose one of two PLLWizard setup programs below. Either setup program will automatically install Microsoft .NET if a compatible .NET version is NOT FOUND. But, the installation source depends upon which file you downloaded from Linear Technology's website. You should pick one of the following two choices, depending upon your version of .NET. | Downloaded Filename | .NET Source -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a)| PLLWizardSetup.exe | latest downloaded from Microsoft (b)| PLLWizardSetup_withNet20.exe | 2.0 SP2 included (much larger file | size) Choose (a) if you: -have .NET 2.0 or later, or have Vista or Windows 7, or -do NOT have .NET 2.0 but want the latest .NET installed. Choose (b) if you: -have less than .NET 2.0, and want faster installation (no additional Microsoft downloads are needed, but the file size is much larger than (b)). 3) Run PLLWizard Setup File Run "PLLWizardSetup" or "PLLWizardSetup_withNet20" to verify/install Microsoft .NET and the PLLWizard. The setup program will create an "LTC" sub-menu in your Program Files menu. Click LTC->PLLWizard to run the software. Refer to the Help menu for software operation. Refer to the appropriate Demo Circuit Quick Start Guide for hardware connection instructions. INSTALLATION TROUBLESHOOTING -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Symptom: Unable to install. A popup states “Another version of this product is already installed….” Solution: You have a previous version of the application already in- stalled which the installer could not remove. Uninstall by selecting “Uninstall PLLWizard” in the LTC program group. Or, uninstall by using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel. Symptom: Installation finishes but the PLLWizard™ application exits with an error. Solution: Microsoft .NET 2.0 or later is not installed. This can be caused by a .NET installation error, or by executing PLLWizard setup without Administrator privileges. Ensure .NET 2.0 or later is installed and/or run PLLWizardSetup with Administrator privileges. Symptom: After installation, PLLWizard fails to start and/or Windows dis- plays a message stating "PLLWizard has stopped working". Solution: Installation was not successfull. When upgrading from to ver- sions 1.5.0 and greater, several system files (dll's) may not be copied correctly. Uninstall PLLWizard by selecting “Uninstall PLLWizard” in the LTC program group. Re-install by running PLLWizardSetup. Symptom: After installation, PLLWizard fails to start and/or Windows dis- plays a message stating "PLLWizard has stopped working". Solution: Early versions of PLLWizard installed a driver in the wrong lo- cation which prevents operation of later versions. Delete the file "ftd2xx.dll" from Program Files (x86)\LTC\PLLWizard or Program Files\LTC\PLLWizard
